Gregory Salazar emerged in 1970 as a leading spokesman for the Mexican American Youth Organization in Houston. He also served as its representative to the Mexican American Education Council. Salazar also worked for citizens' rights in housing and fair employment. He was involved in the Raza Unida Party and an active member of the Venceremos Brigade. In 1971, Salazar ran for election to the Houston Independent School District school board, position 7.
